LA Times:
Branding your firm is a crucial part of your overall marketing strategy. Establishing a brand involves defining your company, knowing exactly what niche you serve in your industry and convincing your potential customers that your product or service is the only solution to their problem.
The smaller the enterprise, the more important branding is because small firms tend to have fewer resources and lower marketing budgets.
If you have established a strong brand, you will not have to do as much marketing to have an effect on potential customers.

Interesting post. I'll have to keep it in mind, because I'd love to run my own business soon. It'll obviously be challenging, so I can use all the help I can get. I want to buy a business rather than start one from scratch. I've thought about a franchise or something home-based, but I don't know. Do you have any suggestions? Advice? Thanks.

Yes, branding is an essentail part of creating critical mass for your business. Branding is one of the main reasons franchise opportunities have such a high success rate versus start-ups- the branding is already in place.
