Golden rules when dealing with the media

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Once you start to deal with the media, you need to be aware of a few golden rules:
  • Everything you say to a journalist is a matter of public record and can be referenced as part of a story unless you specifically ask to speak off the record and get the journalist to agree
  • Never ask to see the story before it goes to print – the journalist may in some cases allow this, but they are not required to
  • Be aware that your story may not get published in the next issue, or even at all, if a more pressing story comes in and the editor changes the layout, the journalist is under no obligation to print
  • Deadline is king – ALWAYS ask a journalist when their deadline is (there is always a deadline) and make sure you get them what they need within that timescale

Great post. Also do remember that many journalists write in shorthand, and sometimes struggle to read back exactly what you said. Sometimes it is worth making brief notes before the interview, and offering them to the journalist to take away with his/her notes.

Hey do you want to access Salesforce.com when you are away from your pc???? You can do it through your mobile and your phone doesn’t need to support internet or GPRS for this.

Check out this MoDazzle site.

MoDazzle gives you the opportunity to access SalesForce on your mobile via SMS and email without internet or GPRS. You can also access Linkedin and Facebook and other online services like Google maps Starbucks etc.

This is some really great advice. It could also be a good idea to offer the journalist any written materials you have, like fact sheets, that might help the journalist write his or her article. That way if the journalist misses a specific statistic during the interview, he or she has something to reference.

Interacting with the media could be the next best thing that could happen to you and your business or ... it could be a nightmare. Special care needs to be taken into account when talking with a journalist, any snippet of your conversation could end up being the title of the article and that is disastrous if you are used to speaking care free.
